It can sometimes be difficult to find ways to stay healthy, so we’ve asked members of our Baylor College of Medicine community to share what they do in their daily lives to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Question: What is your favorite type of exercise?
Answer: Running and Pilates
Q: What keeps you motivated during your workout?
A: Working out a problem (running clears my head) and seeing if I can push my muscles to fatigue (Pilates)
Q: What activities do you do when you can’t fit in a full workout?
A: Sleep! If I can’t work out then I’m probably in the operating room all day and I need rest.
Q: What is your favorite healthful snack?
A: Fresh veggies (English cucumbers, fresh tomato) and fruit (Asian pears and mangos)
Q: What do you include in your child’s lunch?
A: Sliced turkey, yogurt, pringles or pretzels and apple juice
Q: How do you make an unhealthy recipe healthy (healthy substitutions)?
A: Reduce the portion size or look for a way to add veggies so portion is more veggie. Skip the added sugar and salt. Use lean meat when I can.
Q: What is your nighttime skin regimen?
A: Some form of cream cleanser (not picky – whatever is on sale). Peach and Lilly skin glass and matcha moisturizer or Dr. Jart tiger grass if skin is irritated.
Q: What hobbies do you have to help you relax?
A: Time with my kids (but let’s be real, that’s totally 50/50 on whether it will be relaxing), Pilates, building/fixing/tinkering (Lowes is my favorite “department” store).
Q: What is your go-to Houston restaurant for a healthy meal?
A: I don’t eat out much, but when I do I love farm-to-market restaurants with a good beet salad or salmon (I can’t cook it!).
Q: Do you use an activity tracker or Fitbit and what is your daily step goal?
A: I sleep with Oura ring to track heart rate variability, quality and hours of sleep, but can’t wear in the daytime (because, OR).
Q: What is your favorite health tip that you live by?
A: How I feel is a direct reflection of what I put into my health (food in my body, exercise in my day, emotional decompression for my mind). When I feel like I’m not meeting my own standards, I only have to choose something to change.
