Rescuers worked through a frigid night as they combed for survivors in earthquake-stricken areas across Turkey and Syria with the number of deaths nearing crossing the 5,000-mark.

A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.8 rippled through both countries early on Monday, toppling entire apartment blocks, wrecking hospitals, and leaving thousands more people injured or homeless.

After Turkey was hit by three consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 7.8, 7.6 and 6.0 on Monday, another earthquake of magnitude 5.9 was reported in central Turkey on Tuesday.
